PRESS PHOTO BY EMILY THIEL

From left: Anthony Rodale, Marilyn Hazelton and Florence Rodale at FloreAnt Projects Gallery, 215 Main St., Emmaus,

where the next “Sustaining the Soul Through Creative Discovery” workshop is March 23.

Sustaining the inner poet

by EMILY THIEL

Marilyn Hazelton taps into creative roots at FloreAnt Projects Gallery workshops

All art forms have a poetry expressed by the artist and the work they create.

With “Sustaining the Soul Through Creative Discovery,” Marilyn Hazelton offers inspiration to allow one to tap into his or her creative self by writing poetry.

In a series of four workshops at FloreAnt Projects Gallery, 215 Main St., Emmaus, Hazelton guides participants through a background of poetic Japanese art forms, and as a communal group, participants work together to discover and harness their inspiration.

Hazelton’s next workshop, 9 a.m. – noon March 23, concentrates on creative biography by combing meditative prose with tanka or haiku and photographs to create haibun, a Japanese literary form.

The final session, 9 a.m. – noon April 20, celebrates spring and incorporates participants’ photographs with tanka, haiku or haibun.

Hazelton’s monthly workshops began in January and conclude next month.
Anthony and Florence Rodale opened FloreAnt Projects Gallery about one and one-half years ago.

The gallery features artists from San Francisco and New York whose work is global in scope. The Rodales’ focus is to show sustainability through the art of photography.

“We want to show how people use visual images to learn themselves, change and make an impact on their own lives,” Anthony Rodale says.

Florence Rodale’s photography, now on view in the gallery, is based on motions, thoughts, ideas and sensual moments.

“We’ve created our own community here,” Florence Rodale says. “We like creating poetry and photography” in the space of the gallery.

Hazelton, in synch with the gallery’s sustainability goal, held a workshop at FloreAnt Gallery in December.

“Because of the response [we had], there were four more offered for 2013,” says Anthony Rodale.

Hazelton is Poet-in-Residence at The Swain School, Salisbury Township; a teaching artist with the Pennsylvania Council on the arts; a regular presenter at Haiku Society of America meetings; and an editor of red lights, an international tanka journal.

She received an Arts Ovation Award in the category of Literary Arts from the Allentown Arts Commission in 2006.

Hazelton draws from her educational background to inspire those in the workshop by allowing them to feel “comfortable that however you think is just right.”

She uses her knowledge of poetry to inspire work within oneself. For her, writing through artistic formats sustains her spirituality and opens up her ceative channels.

With “Sustaining the Soul Through Creative Discovery,” Hazelton strives for a mindfulness that is developed, sparked by creativity.

Each workshop uses haiga, a form where art and poetry work together. The form dates to an ancient tradition of ink illustrations and poems being created in tandem, but as one art form.

“Writing in these forms informs all my writing, whether it’s non-fiction or essay,” she elaborates, adding that having to be selective of the specific words is incredibly helpful with revising her writing and allows her to better understand and express detail.

Hazelton’s first session covered composing tanka, a five-phrase Japanese poetic form. The second was about how to write a haiku, a three-phrase Japanese form, coinciding with February’s National Haiku Writing Month.

The gallery is crisp and calm as the space opens up the channels of inspiration. A session is limited to 18 participants. Each brings one to three photographs and writes poetry in response to or inspired by beauty.

At last month’s session, Hazelton explains to participants, “Sustaining the spirit is work and needs to be done,” adding the importance of “finding an authentic place within the self.”

Working in a group gives support for the work and also hints to the tradition of the poetry. The response to beauty is more traditional, where Hazelton encourages participants to allow themselves to be open.

From the workshops, Hazelton hopes that attendees are “encouraged to be creative in the following weeks, months, years.

“I’m hoping they will come back, and be encouraged to photograph, to write, to have a particular experience,” Hazelton says.

“Everyone walks away with something,” says Anthony Rodale, emphasizing that the experience “let’s you know how to go deeper into yourself and your work and share it.”

SUSTAINING THE SOUL: A Creative Process Journey of Seeing and Writing

Emmaus PA: Poet/photographer Marilyn Hazelton, will be offering her interactive workshop Sustaining The Soul at FloreAnt Projects Gallery/ Studio, Nov.17, 2012 from 9:00 am to noon. A selection of Marilyn’s original photographic work combining tanka poetry ((a Japanese 5-phrase poetic form) and images, will be on display at the gallery November 17- December 15.

Photographers, painters, writers and students are invited to participate in this event. A goal of the workshop is to deepen participants’ insights into their own art and that of other artists and to discover new visual and textual meaning. The program will also touch on creative process as an avenue of emotional, mental and spiritual clarity. Those taking the workshop may bring 1-3 photographs to respond to in writing, or choose to focus on photographs in the gallery exhibits. Through a technique called “link and shift”, participants will gain insight into their own art.

“Linking poems and photographs,” Hazelton says, ” can lead to new understanding of joy, love and hope, or grief, anger and fear, and sharpen artistic goals.

A GLIMPSE INTO WHO SHARES THIS PLANET

Emmaus PA- New York City photographer William Coupon’s “The Fair, The Flea and Faces” photography exhibit will be on display at FloreAnt Projects Studio/Gallery in Emmaus, PA from October 26 to December 16, 2012. The opening reception will take place at the gallery October 26 from 5:30 to 9:00 pm. This will be a great opportunity to meet the internationally-acclaimed artist. “The Fair, The Flea and Faces” exhibit will present a selection of Rembrandt-like portraits extracted from Coupon’s work with indigenous people from around the world (Faces), and a new series (The Fair and The Flea) made documentary-style in the Lehigh Valley.

“I had started out with one goal in mind: to photograph everyone in the world. I got off to a pretty good start, but I realized soon after I began, it was going to take a lot more work than first anticipated.” Coupon says.

Many of Coupon’s personal photographic projects – referred to as “Social Studies” – became documents of indigenous people. These include projects on Haiti, Australian Aboriginals, Native Americans, Scandinavian Laplanders, Israeli Druzim, Moroccan Berbers, Alaskan Yupik, Spanish Gypsies, Turkish Kurds, Central African Pygmy, and Panamanian Cuna and Chocoe. These projects were always photographed formally on the backdrop, and contextually, or environmentally, with 2 and 1/4 Rolleiflex black and white images, which were meant to be companions to the studio portraits.

Coupon became interested in formal studio portraits in 1979 while observing the lower Manhattan youth (his peers) and the present counter-culture, and decided early-on to use a single-light source and simple mottled backdrop as a studio style.

In 1992, Coupon was invited to photograph the world’s tribal leaders during Earth Summit, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was asked by the United Nations and the United States Congress in November of 1994 to exhibit this work in the United States Senate Rotunda, as part of the United Nations’ “Year of the Indigenous People.”

In addition to Coupon’s personal work, he has worked extensively in commercial photography and film. He has photographed many Magazine covers such as: 15 Time covers including portraits of all the United States Presidents since Richard Nixon; Newsweek covers include Michael Ovitz and Jerry Garcia; Rolling Stone Magazine covers include Mick Jagger, George Harrison, Jerry Garcia, and Neil Young; The New York Times Sunday Magazine covers include Secretary of State George P. Shultz, Elie Wiesel, and a major investigative article on the Turkish Kurds.

Coupon has photographed some of the world’s leaders including Benazir Bhutto, Yasser Arafat, Kofi Annan, and Prince Phillip. He has won several awards through assignments for Esquire, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, People, Details, The Economist, Texas Monthly, Playboy, Forbes, Fortune, and many other international publications. He has completed major advertising campaigns for Nike, FedEx, Transamerica, Ford, Japan Airlines, Amgen, Searle, BlueCross BlueShield, Apple Computer, Maxell Audio, and most recently working on the global corporate ad campaign for HP through Goodby, Silverstein and Partners. Coupon has also worked on major corporate campaigns for Merrill/Lynch.

A book with the working title “Social Studies” is forthcoming and will be available in an E-book version January 15, 2013.

FloreAnt Projects Studio/Gallery exhibits emerging and established photographers and presents their work around the idea of sustainability and related themes. Gallery hours: Saturday 11am – 4pm; Sunday 10am – 2pm; any other day – by appointment, call 610. 421.8871. To preview a selection of the coming exhibit please visit: http://floreantprojects.com/gallery/william-coupon

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

IMPERMANENCE AND BEAUTY IN THE PHOTOGRAPHIC GARDEN

EMMAUS, PA – Internationally acclaimed, professional garden photographer Matthew Benson will be exhibiting 14 prints from his very personal series “Birds, Beasts and Flowers” from May 25 through June 24, 2012 at FloreAnt Projects. Also featured will be a selection of photographs from his latest publication “ The Photographic Garden: Mastering the Art of Digital Photography” (Rodale 2012). The opening reception will be held May 25 from 5:30 to 8:30pm as well as a book signing. A lecture presentation (10:00 am to noon) and a hands-on, on-location, intensive workshop (5:00 – 8:30 pm) will be conducted by the artist Saturday, May 26. Registration is required for the lecture and workshop as space is limited. More details can be found at http://floreantprojects.com/matthew-benson.

The “Birds, Beasts and Flowers” series, inspired by a D.H. Lawrence poem of the same name is comprised of 14 fine art, limited edition digital Iris prints on archival watercolor paper. “There’s more to the garden than meets the eye – more life and death, more interdependence, more fragility. These images of small secretive creatures, often juxtaposed against unexpected backgrounds, conjures up their impermanence, and to some degree their precarious place in the modern world. Photographing them against a seamless background pulls their details forward and allows you to see them as objects of incredible design and complexity. Like memento mori, they are reminders of our own mortality, impermanence and beauty,” says Benson.

The Photographic Garden lecture is a dynamic and inspiring presentation on the fundamentals of successful garden photography. It is open to photographers of all levels and gardening enthusiasts to sharpen their photographic skills to become better, more intuitive artists in the garden. The event will be held at FloreAnt Projects Gallery in Emmaus, PA.

The Photographic Garden Workshop: Mastering the Art of Digital Garden Photography is a two-parts workshop including the morning lecture and a 3-hour intensive, hands-on workshop creating powerful images in the garden, with location shooting, on-site feedback, and portfolio review. The photo shoot will be held at the original Organic Gardening Experimental Farm Homestead in Allentown, PA.

Matthew Benson’s photography is in the permanent collection of the International Center of Photography, New York, as well as numerous private and gallery collections. He is on the National Speakers Tour for the Garden Clubs of America, and lectures widely on Garden and Landscape Photography. Magazine clients include House & Garden, Traditional Home, Better Homes & Gardens, Condé Nast Traveler, Esquire, GQ, This Old House, The New York Times, Garden Design, Country Home, Country Living, Country Gardens, Saveur, Martha Stewart Everyday Food, and Martha Stewart Everyday Baking.

He is a contributing editor and television spokesman for Rodale’s Organic Gardening, and writes and photographs frequently on issues of sustainability, organics and food justice. His latest book projects are Urban Farms (Abrams, 2011), and The Photographic Garden: Mastering the Art of Digital Garden Photography (Rodale, 2012).

Raised and educated in Europe, with a Masters Degree from Columbia University, he is a trans-Atlantic sailor and certified alpine ski instructor. Architecture, Design, and biodynamic organic farming are ongoing interests, as is the restoration of Stonegate Farm (http://www.stonegatefarmNY.org), the 1860s Carpenter Gothic farm he shares with his wife Heidi, and children Daisy Marlena and Miles. Matthew lives and works in both North America and Europe.
